Spain: Storm Emma causes severe damage to berry greenhouses

Greenhouse structures (macrotunnels) devoted to the cultivation of strawberries and other berries, such as raspberries and blueberries, have been severely damaged by winds reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour, which have hit the south-west of Spain due to the passing of storm Emma.

Agroseguro has said in a statement that they have already received "damage reports corresponding to almost 1,130 hectares, with 1,282 greenhouses affected."

The insurance for strawberry and berry crops "is very successful in the producing sector, with an implantation of around 60%, and more than 940 policies have been signed ahead of the 2018 harvest," covering around 7,100 hectares and a production that exceeds 220,000 tonnes.

Almost all of them have been signed in the province of Huelva, according to Agroseguro.

Emma has also caused wind damage in the Canary Islands, especially to banana plantations, although there will also be less severe damages to greenhouse structures and horticultural and tropical crops.
