Italy: Premium date tomatoes by Azienda Agricola Ottone

"Over the years, we have understood that growing produce wasn't generating enough profit for us. After accurate deliberation and after having made a few investments, we started commercialising our tomatoes directly," explains owner Giuseppe Ottone.

"We currently own 7 hectares of protected crops, two of which are soil-less, and produces around 80 tons of bunch date tomatoes."

The company processes its own produce in a 500 square metre warehouse. There are 10 stations for sorting and packaging.

Interview with Giuseppe Ottone

"We employ traditional cultivation methods, however our strict protocols mean we can reassure our clients and provide guarantees to our final customers."

"We focus on Premium plum tomatoes. In the future, we would like to introduce loose tomatoes packaged as snacks. This segment needs to be supported because of its commercial value. We would like to promote the consumption of healthy nutritious snacks."

Date tomatoes

This could be a way of promoting the product as well as educating younger consumers in Europe and beyond. The lifestyle in industrialised countries is less and less healthy and inactive, characterised by excessive junk food.

"Prosperity diseases" are increasingly common in wealthy societies and snacks such as fresh tomatoes (and fresh fruit and vegetables in general) help with being healthy.
