Agro-Industry Ministry supports affected planters

Heavy rainfall Mauritius

Following the recent prolonged heavy rainfall that has caused much damage to crops, the Mauritius Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security is providing support and assistance to planters.

Plantations in the eastern part of the island have been most affected by the torrential rainfall and production of vegetables such as tomatoes and carrots has been diminished by almost 50%. The government will distribute compost, fertilizers and seeds to severely affected planters, so they can restart their activities.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mahen Seeruttun, on Saturday 13 January 2018 following a visit to the eastern region. This measure, he added, will enable growers to restart vegetable production promptly, enhancing their sustainability and reducing the production gap.

Allafrica.com reported that Seeruttun further highlighted that his Ministry is awaiting a report from the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute on the extent crop damages across the country following the heavy rainfall.
