Poland: Citronex sets goal of 100 hectare covered production

The Polish fruit and vegetable market is a regional one, whenever possible, and tomatoes are no exception. In the past, artificially lighted greenhouses were virtually unheard of due to costs, making it impossible to have year round production, but this is quickly becoming a thing of the past with modern greenhouse technology and lighting.

Citronex started investing in new lands back in 2011 with a long term goal of building new greenhouses and continuing to expand annually, in order to reach the goal of 100 hectares of covered production.

"We have been increasing our production year by year, and this year we are growing on 26 hectares of artificially lighted production, along with 24 hectares of regular production, coming to a total area of 50 hectares. We have been really happy with the results this season, the quality has been really good," Andrzej Kornafel said.

Last month in December, the company had an IFS certificate audit, with good results and Andrzej said that he was hoping that this would open the doors for the German market.

"We are of course, always looking for new EU contacts, but we are focusing on the German market at the moment. These things take time, and we have been starting with small volumes at the moment," Andrzej continued.

"We would like to see the kind of success in new markets for our raspberry (pink) tomato variety as we have seen in Poland, where many compare the tomato to those they used to get out of the home garden, but I have noticed that this is going to take some time. We will need to educate people first though because a lot of people are scared to try them because they think they are unripe due to the lighter colour. The good news is that once people do try them, they love the flavour too."
