Asthma tech used to slow fruit-ripening in NZ

According to an article on thespinoff.co.nz, scientists are trying to help asthma sufferers and others needing oxygen at home by developing ‘molecular sponges’ with nano-scale-sized pores to purify the air. These ‘molecular sponges’ are really metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). “MOFs are mostly free space, framed in metal and with a large organic component.” The pores in MOFs can be made the same size as gas molecules.

These MOFs can, however, also be put to other uses. As they are able to absorb different gasses, the MOFs will soon be used commercially in New Zealand, employed to slow fruit-ripening.
