US (AZ): Yuma Area Ag Council enlightens officials about ag industry

County Commissioners, City Councilpersons, Mayors, City Managers and other officials from Yuma County will come together this week for a legislative dinner and tour hosted by the Yuma Area Agricultural Council (YAAC).

Yuma County is the nation’s third largest vegetable producer. The success of agriculture in this region can be attributed to the rich soil, access to water and more than 350 days of sunshine a year; making Yuma County the winter lettuce capital of the world (between November and March each year).
 
The annual legislative tour affords elected officials the opportunity to learn more about the region's agriculture and the $4.2 billion industry that ranks number one in Yuma for economic impact.
 
Ashley Kerna, Economic Impact Analyst for the University of Arizona Extension- Department of Ag and Resource Economics will be the keynote speaker at the pre-tour dinner on Thursday, December 7, where legislators will have the opportunity to meet with local growers.
 
On Friday, December 8, the tour includes a mechanical harvest field tour; Sakata Seed tour; and lunch at La Cocina Main Street Café (part of Regional Center for Border Health).
 
Yuma Area Agricultural Council, Inc. (YAAC) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation formed to promote the value of agriculture in Yuma County and the State of Arizona. YAAC strives to educate the general public and public officials about the Yuma agriculture community. Kevin Eatherly, YAAC President, “These tours have a great turnout every year. It is an opportunity for industry leaders to directly discuss and educate elected officials on topics and issues that impact the industry. It is important for our officials to know who to call when they have questions about pending legislation.”
