Ukrainian tomato & cucumber prices increase dramatically

Tomato prices have been rapidly growing in Ukraine and have already reached their record high, according to Fruit-Inform.

Ukrainian cucumber prices increased by 2.5% over in the same period of the previous year, according to Fruit-Inform.

Now greenhouse growers sell their tomatoes at UAH 24-28/kg (EUR 0.77-0.90/kg), an increase of 60% since the beginning of this week.

The sector experts connect a rapid rise in prices with a shortage of supply of tomatoes in the market, as the majority of farmers have already finished their season.

Traders are still unable to compensate for a shortage of supply with imports as shipments from Turkey remain irregular, and prices of Turkish tomatoes reach UAH 38/kg (EUR 1.22/kg).

As a result, the current prices of Ukrainian tomatoes are 35% higher compared with the second half of November 2016. The market participants expect prices to continue to grow, as the supply of domestic tomatoes has been rapidly decreasing.

Ukrainian cucumbers have become 20-33% more expensive over the past week. As a result, their prices have already reached record high and now vary between UAH 40-42/kg (EUR 1.28-1.35/kg).

The market participants connect a rise in prices with the end of the season, as reported by the majority of domestic greenhouse farms. Meanwhile, imports from Turkey are still low and irregular due to bad weather conditions there.
