Producers of bok choy in California are set to move towards warmer areas in the next month as the summer season in Salinas comes to a close. It has been a steady season for growers with little trouble, as they have not been adversely affected by the extended hot spells that occurred during those months.
"Our bok choy program runs all year," said Tom Polk, of Growers Express. "The Salinas summer season is about to finish. It typically runs from May to November before moving south to the Imperial Desert Valley which will run until April. Supplies have been close to average and we have seen quality and yields close to the long term trend. There was one major heat spell during the growing season that had potential to impact our crop. However, there wasn't any damage sustained and did not affect production. Overall, it's been a pretty quiet season, with nothing too extreme either way."
Fresh and processed market holds steady
Bok choy continues to enjoy steady favor among customers in both the fresh and processed markets. As a result, the market also has not fluctuated greatly and provides growers with a stable crop that will sell. Polk also observed that those on healthy diets as well as customers seeking out alternative ingredients in their meals often seek out bok choy. The reason is that it is relatively cheap and contains a good level of vitamins for a healthy diet.
"This year, the bok choy market has been quite stable," Polk said. "The price has held steady in a range where most people feel comfortable. Despite some other ingredients grabbing people's attention in the last few years, bok choy remains a popular vegetable. People like to buy bok choy as an alternative to the regular meat and carb-rich diet. It's also quite economical to buy. Additionally, it has gained traction in the processed market where it is blended with other ingredients, so we've been seeing a general climb in that area."
