US (PA): World's first solar powered indoor farm comes to Philadelphia

At Metropolis Farms they are building indoor farms, and they’re still using the sun to power the growth of crops. Just not in the traditional sense.

Pictured above is a massive 100,000 sq foot solar array with 2,003 solar panels, and it captures enough sunlight to supply over half a megawatt of energy. Underneath those panels, on the fourth floor of this building, Metropolis Farms are constructing an indoor vertical farm that will grow the equivalent of 660 outdoor acres worth of crops in less than 100,000 sq feet, annually. The panels are already installed and turned on, now they’re building out the farm. The first crops will be planted in November.

This is the world’s first completely solar-powered indoor farm.

Before starting this project, the fourth floor of this building was only growing pigeons. But now, using innovative technology that can uniquely grow everything, this solar powered indoor farm will be growing fresh tomatoes, strawberries, lettuce, herbs, broccoli, and other crops for local Philadelphians.

To this point, the city of Philadelphia has only 8 acres of urban farming, mainly because there’s no available land for growing crops traditionally.

The solar panels will provide a sufficient amount of energy to power the farm below.
