Smart Yookr sensor network speeds up start of new operation

Dutch nursery Grenspaal is a leading company in the innovation of greenhouse horticulture. In August 2016, Maurice Kassenbouw started the construction of a new high tech greenhouse, which was completed in December 2016. Before the greenhouse was handed over, Maurice Kassenbouw and Kwekerij Grenspaal contacted Yookr, because it was clear to them that the innovative sensors of Yookr could be used immediately to speed up the setting-up of the greenhouse.

Roy Steegh, owner of Kwekerij Grenspaal: "Normally it takes about a year before you know the greenhouse well and have set it up properly. However, by installing Yookr's sensors in the greenhouse, we expected that we could reduce this period substantially."

Measuring is knowing
The sensors, combined with the clear Yookr dashboard provided instant insight. Both temperature and humidity and CO2 are measured at several locations in the greenhouse. In the traditional way, this will be measured at a single central position from each section.

Roy indicates: "Because we have insight into the overall temperature range in the entire greenhouse, we could make optimizations within a few weeks, which otherwise would have taken us months.
"Finally, together with Maurice Kassenbouw and Yookr, we succeeded in reducing the start-up period to find the optimal settings from 1 year to 3 months."

The beautiful thing is that you can follow the effect of changes immediately and thus gett to know the greenhouse better.

Wireless sensors
The sensors used at Kwekerij Grenspaal work on the basis of the new LoRaWAN network from KPN. This nationwide network makes it possible to work with wireless sensors that work on a single battery charge for years. With this network, expensive installations and laying of cables for these installations are a thing of the past.

The innovative sequel
The setting-up of the greenhouse was a first step together. In addition, collaboration is also done in other areas. Besides measurements of air quality, Roy wanted to know more about the growth of TOVs and other possible optimizations. In cooperation with Yookr, all available data are combined with globally available data about, among other things, climate and planet positions. By combining all of these data, it has for example become clear, that the ripening of TOVs at full moon is slower than during other periods. Roy declares: "Together with Yookr, we gain insight in more areas, we can bring tomato cultivation to a higher level, and so increase our competitiveness."

For Maurice Kassenbouw, this project provides the possibility of receiving measurements on the performance of the built greenhouses on a continuous basis. With these measurement data, the grower can be monitored proactively from a distance. In addition, this insight ensures that the design of the greenhouse can be improved. This project is a clear example of partnership and a win-win-win situation for Nursery Grenspaal, Maurice Kassenbouw as well as Yookr.
