"Narrow slabs offer us better rooting"

Van den Belt, a Dutch tomato nursery from IJsselmuiden has been growing TOV and plum tomatoes for many years. Since 2010, cultivation is done on Benfried's Premium stone wool substrate from Multigrow. To their full satisfaction. Jacob van den Belt, who together with his brother Klaas owns the 20 hectarecompany, tells about his experiences.

Narrow slab

Before switching to Multigrow Premiumstone wool in 2010, Jacob van den Belt conducted six tests with different types of rock wool. "This also included the 15 centimeter narrow substrate slab from Multigrow," Jacob says. "What we noticed is that these slabs had roots throughout that were just as good as in the wider slabs of the past. The narrow slab also remained wet up to the upper part and could be saturated again. The slab contains a quarter less rock wool than the wider slab and that makes it also cheaper. We actually got more for less and therefore the choice to switch to Multigrow Premium was easy," Jacob continues.
Logistics

Benfried supplies the slabs under the name of Multrigrow Premium, whereby the used stone wool is produced with a formaldehyde-free binder, which makes it more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Jacob: "Because Multigrow manages the logistics themselves, they are flexible in delivering the stone wool. At the company we do not have sufficient storage space for the total quantity so the stone wool is supplied in tranches for each phase. The stone wool is also neatly stacked on pallets and packaged well so it can also temporarily be stored outside."
