Australia: Powerplants and Philips collaborate on LED interlighting trial

Powerplants and Philips recently collaborated to facilitate a unique trial of LED interlighting at Chisholm Institute’s National Precision Growing Centre. The trial was devised because growers were seeking real-time investigation into the benefits of LED lighting on high vine crops such as tomatoes, under Australian conditions.

“Having a live site where we could obtain data on plant growth, performance and yields has been something of a ‘missing link’ for Australian growers,” said Powerplants Product manager for Lighting, Tony Bundock. “There is a wealth of information about lighting and the potential yield increases from the Northern hemisphere, but growers have been keen to access real data that relates directly to our unique conditions here in Australia. This trial will provide that opportunity” said Tony.

The trial is being hosted at Chisholm’s Cranbourne campus, and will allow growers to visit and learn about this crop area via appointment. Chisholm students are undertaking a comprehensive crop registration process to monitor plant growth rates and yield rates. The lighting control is provided by Chisholm’s Priva Climate control system.

Materials and installation costs for the trial have been proudly provided by Powerplants and Philips. The installation was carried out with the practical assistance of Tony Bundock (Powerplants), Colin Bednarz (Chisholm) and Aart Slobbe (Philips).

“We are really excited about being able to provide a practical facility for growers to observe and gain knowledge from” said Aart Slobbe - Philips Key Account manager, Australia. “Philips is committed to working closely with our direct partners, Powerplants, to assist in developing the productivity of growers via the adoption of this type of technology” said Aart.

As the data from the trial is collated, Powerplants and Philips will be working closely to update growers on the findings.
