Turkish traders eat tomatoes in protest

During a press conference in Antalya, Turkey, a grower’s association from the province protested against the Russian tomato boycott. Three spokespersons ate tomatoes in protest and to show that the quality is good and that the vegetable is free from hormones, according to Turkish media.

The sector was waiting on the Russian market opening ahead of the new season, but the negative statements from Moscow were followed by disappointment. During the press conference, the growers didn’t just look at Russia, criticism was also expressed about the Turkish conduct. “Russia announced that the decision is the result of investments made in horticulture,” said Nevzat Akcan of the grower’s association. “And we are making an effort to end our agriculture and remove our growers, commissioners and importers. We’re opening the way to export in such a way that it’s harming our products and producers.”

Additionally, the suggestion that the tomatoes were injected with hormones was also slammed. Researchers were invited to investigate these claims, and they refuted the allegations. Finally, criticism was also expressed about the logistical side of export. Air transport for agrarian products is still not possible from the province, so that part of the world remains out of reach.

In protest and to prove that the tomatoes are safe, three spokespersons ate some of the red vegetables.
