August 25, Tucson

US (AZ): Biosphere 2, CEAC and innovative food production

The next CEAC Covering Environments Seminar will be held Friday, August 25th, from 4:15 PM to 5:15 PM in the CEAC Lecture Room (1951 E. Roger Road).

At 4:15 PM, Joaquin Ruiz, PhD (Executive Dean Colleges of Letters, Arts & Science; VP for Innovation, UofA) will give his presentation entitled “Trans-College Collaborations: Biosphere 2, CEAC and Innovative Food Production”. The seminar will be followed by Q&A.

Ruiz's title might as well be Renaissance Dean and Innovation Pioneer. Joaquin Ruiz began his academic career as a high school teacher in Mexico, then discovered his passion for picking up and studying rocks anywhere he went for a hike. He rapidly transformed this passion to a leadership position in the geosciences and then undertook a leadership role as the quintessential interdisciplinary dean of the Colleges of Letters, Arts & Science. Because the above scientific and administrative platform was not challenging enough for him, he has also been tasked to lead the highly complex research projects at the largest greenhouse on earth-Biosphere 2.

But, was that all enough for Joaquin? Of course not! In addition to it all he has become a passionate and most persuasive promoter of Tucson as one of the "most beautiful places on earth" due to its unsurpassed biodiversity, natural beauty cultural background and four thousand years of human habitation.

As you will experience in his forthcoming CEAC seminar, Ruiz does not give speeches; he engages his audiences in conversations while, at the same time, challenging them to participate in understanding complex research projects and exhorting them to take action for the betterment of humankind everywhere. In this seminar, Dr. Ruiz will discuss recent collaborations between the CoS and CALS as exemplified by a unique project using B2 facilities and know-how, CEAC expertise and private sector initiatives for novel food production.

If you are unable to attend in person, the seminar series will be available via the web. Register here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/4920843778212089091
