Spain: Piccolo tomatoes hit supermarket shelves for the first time

June was a key month for Les Jardins de Rabelais, as its Piccolo tomatoes started to be marketed for the first time in a Spanish supermarket chain. So far, it was only possible to find them in Mercabarna, one of the largest wholesale markets in the country.

"For now, 50% of the production intended for the mainland market goes to Mercabarna, and the other half to this large retailers," explains Félix Herrero Montoliu, commercial manager in Spain of Le Jardin de Rabelais. Nevertheless, asking Herrero about future prospects, he comments that "we would like to be able to work together with other large retailers in Spain, as well as to be present in other wholesale markets and make our product more widely known."

Herrero has only been formally marketing Piccolo tomatoes for 7 months, and although it is still soon to draw conclusions, he can say that "they are mostly consumed in the area of the east and centre," at least based on the orders that it receives from the large retailer with which it is collaborating. In the north of the country, a market which he believes has a lot of potential, "we still have some work to do," and this also applies to the south.
