How measuring the fruit temperature raises the yield

At Kwekerij Moors, Pointed Temperature Sensors ensure a reduction in product loss and better growing peppers. Kwekerij Moor co-owner Sander Berkers explains how the temperature figures have helped his company.

"Like a sports physician wants to know and measure everything about an athlete, we want to know and measure everything about our plants. Part of this is pure professionalism: they can't tell you when they're too hot or are thirsty," says Sander. "Our goal is to make the environment as optimal as possible for our pepper plants. Think temperature, air humidity and water supply in the greenhouse. The more we know, the better we can set up our greenhouse."



Developing the sensor
The pepper growers worked together with 30MHz to develop a sensor that can measure the fruit temperature of a pepper. This is done with a flexible infrared temperature sensor. It can measure the temperature of a fruit or vegetable crop from close by. "With the information that is available to us through this sensor, we can set up the greenhouse even better for the pepper plants. We can control the temperature by turning the heating on, or by ventilating if it gets too hot," says Sander. There is also a wireless water level measure in the greenhouse.

He says the first results look promising. "Through a combination of professionalism and measurements we can control the climate so that the CO2 level is as high as possible, to enable good photosynthesis for the plant. That's pepper paradise. We are looking forward to further optimising the sensor over the coming period."



Optimising
Optimising is also done in collaboration with 30MHz. "The tests have been finalised, we are fully in the market with the system," says Niels Lauwers of 30Mhz. "We are now collecting data so that we can talk climate technically. A difference can already be seen in various greenhouses thanks to the sensors. We are very satisfied with this."

The sensors are also applied outside of peppers. "Tomatoes, cucumbers, but also in bulbs. We monitor the temperature in greenhouses but can also work with the water system. Growers can find their own application with the wireless sensors." This is the core of the company's system. "It doesn't really matter what you want to measure. The temperature division in the greenhouse, the amount of ozone or the population of the canteen. We look for the sensors together and we can make all figures visible."
