China: Multiple market factors lead to increased blueberry production

"Every year, the blueberry season starts halfway through March all over the country, and it ends half way through August. In comparison to last season, the output of blueberries has increased by approximately 35%. The price is also somewhat higher than last year", explains mister Gao Lei from Rich Lands Farms enterprise in Jiangsu province.

"There are several reasons for the increased output of blueberries. First of all, the amount of rain and the rare extreme weather conditions have provided favourable conditions to the growth of the blueberries. Moreover, in comparison to other fruit, the economic profits on the blueberry market are generally somewhat higher. Blueberries were also very popular on the selling markets during the past few years and, because of this drive, many fruit farmers and plantation firms have expanded to a certain degree. Lastly, the more advanced technologies for cultivation and improvements of quality have caused a high yield of blueberries."

"Compared to bananas, apples and other popular kinds of fruit, blueberries are pretty rare. Except for being simply eaten like any other fruit, they also have high levels of anthocyanidin which has the medicinal function of lowering cholesterol. Therefore, for the past few years, the blueberry market has constantly been in a state where supply cannot meet demand. So, although the output this season is somewhat larger, the price at present is still higher than last year."
