New blocky pepper varieties at de Ruiter

Seed breeder De Ruiter has invested heavily in many new pepper varieties which are currently in the pipeline. Franky van Looveren, sales manager at De Ruiter: "We plan to approach the pepper market in the same way as we are currently doing in the cucumber market, which is going well."

The first new pepper variety has already been introduced this year: San Siro. With the introduction of San Siro, De Ruiter is back again in the yellow pepper segment. Franky van Looveren: "Growers can count on San Siro's excellent production and good fruit quality. The production is constant, with many fruits per square meter and a stable fruit weight. The easy setting and fast coloring make San Siro the ideal yellow blocky pepper variety."

With an average fruit weight of 180-210 grams and a fruit size of 8.5x8, these peppers are suitable for the fresh market. This year is the first season that San Siro is commercial. It is still too early to be able to judge the entire year. It is looking good so far; the crop has an easy early setting and is therefore productive early in the year.

San Siro is suitable for the Northern European market. Franky: "It is remarkable that only Northern Europe is familiar with block peppers. In other areas, the pointed peppers are much more common. Pointed peppers we know here, of course. "The breed of pointed peppers Ramiro of De Ruiter Seeds is doing well in the Netherlands. In the meantime Ramiro even has acquired the status of brand name within the retail sector."
