Not enough early Danish strawberries to meet demand
"It is especially difficult to produce enough strawberries to meet consumer demand earlier in the season." shared Joachim Landrok from Danish importer EuroFrugt.
Open field production would normally have started last week, but has been delayed by the weather until this week, so the only strawberries available up until and the previous month, have been grown in glasshouses.
"It is always guesswork to know when the season will really start which makes it really difficult for planning. There was a berry promotion planned last week for one of the retailers before the berries were actually available. These promotions are always planned several weeks in advance, so it's always a gamble." continued Joachim.
"Contracts are usually drawn up between growers and retailers, who set the price for the season. When there is a case of overproduction, the growers then turn to the wholesale market. In times of shortage, we usually import from Germany, the Netherlands or Poland. The first choice for consumers is always Danish strawberries first, regardless of the price, followed by whichever imported strawberries are the best quality with no preferences to where it comes from."
The current prices are pretty standard at the moment, with retail prices falling around €2.53 for 350 gr. The 500 gr packaging is starting this week, and prices are expected to drop, as usual, during the season.
