Cédric Bleuset, Hollyberry:

“Too much soft fruit is pushed onto the Dutch market”

Temperatures are rising and productions of various types of fruit are in full swing. “There’s too much of everything, really. Or not enough demand, that’s a possibility as well, of course,” says Cédric Bleuset of Hollyberry. “The month of May can’t be called good. We’ve had very few high points so far. It looks as if berries are under more pressure this year.”

Low prices
According to him, much is pushed onto the Dutch market from the south, and this has much influence on our markets in Northern Europe. “Raspberries have much product on the market. Blueberries have also been under pressure for a few weeks, and have very low prices. Last week, they went up a few cents, but it’s still not much. Strawberries are also a difficult story, they went from very expensive to very cheap, and today we saw prices getting a bit more expensive again. Much volume and little demand. Spanish product is also still on the market. All in all, it’s not easy in soft fruit. You can’t continue to push, when there’s no demand, that’s it. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.”

Some types of soft fruit also have smaller volumes. “The Mexican blackberry season has finished. Belgium and the Netherlands just started. Prices started dropping a week-and-a-half ago. It’s a small product, but it’s doing all right.”
