Han van den Wijngaart:

"High plantloads no problem for reinforced hooks"

Malfuntioning of tomato hooks can occur quite regularly with the high plant load these days. "Actually it's not really unexpected," says Han van den Wijngaart of Tomato hook production company Van den Wijngaart. "The average plant load has kept increasing in recent decades, but the shape of the tomato hooks was not adjusted at all." Therefor, Han has made changes to the design.

Two years ago, Han van den Wijngaart thoroughly examined his tomato hooks, the reason for this was the use of the bio-degradable Elite Bio Twine from Lankhorst Yarns. "It's just a bit more rough than conventional rope and just ran slightly different through the wrapping machines. So we needed a firmer tomato hook," he mentions. By changing the shape of the tomato hook slightly, it also became a lot more sturdy. And according to Han, that also can make the difference if you use normal rope. Therefore, all the hooks we produce this year are with the renewed shape.

Plant load increase
"Only during the season the importance of quality becomes evident. And during this time, with high plant load, the new shape makes the difference," Han shows. "The plants are now top heavy and you see the less sturdy hooks get constricted. They sag a bit, the rope becomes entangled, and unwinding and lowering is much more difficult. It not only costs a lot more time, but also results in more stress for the plant. That will keep occurring the rest of the season. That’s what we want to avoid."

Whoever wants to test the reinforced tomato hooks, now or during the next season, is welcome to contact one of the dealers.
