Portugal: Aquaponics featured at environmental sustainability expo

The team from Aquaponics Iberia and the Portuguese members representing the EU Aquaponics Hub COST Action recently put on a display at GREENFEST, the biggest sustainability event in Portugal, at the Torres Vedras exhibition centre.

The 18 square meter aquaponics system, which had been designed specifically for educational purposes – for schools, research and exhibitions – was one of the main attractions of the fair, and was visited by more than 2000 visitors, of whom half were school students. The vast majority of the visitors at the 3 day event were unfamiliar with the concept of aquaponics.

The demonstration system will be permanently exhibited at the Centre for Environmental Education in Torres Vedras, which is visited annually by about 4000 school students. The city of Torres Vedras is located a few kilometres north of Lisbon. The municipality is very committed to the environment and to the sustainable development of its territory, and was awarded the European Green Leaf award in 2015.
