Spain: Courgette prices fall due to lack of planning

The Agrarian Organizations ASAJA and COAG Almería have issued a call for marketers in the province to coordinate and exchange information. The idea is to be able to plan the campaigns and prevent market collapses, taking into account the growing schedules of other Spanish production areas.

Both organizations believe that "the way forward is very clear. For several months, we have been suffering severe crises with products such as courgettes, which barely reach 15 cents/kilo. In order to avoid this situation, we suggest a commercial revolution, where the different cooperatives and local growers exchange information to plan the campaign. However, we also stress the importance of the grower belonging to a PO in order to carry out the lines of action we propose," explain sources from ASAJA and COAG, mentioning, for example, that only 18% of courgette producers are part of a PO.

"This is not an individual war; that is not how the sector works. We have to be organised commercially in order to deal with the abuses of the markets," they explain.
