Record-breaking Spanish cucumber exports

In 2016, Spanish cucumber exports were record-breaking in terms of both volume and value, according to data processed by Hortoinfo and supplied by the statistical service Estacom (Icex-Agencia Tributaria), with code 0707 of the Integrated Tariff of the European Communities (TARIC).

The total volume of cucumbers exported in 2016 was 633.48 million kilos, the highest amount in history and 41.19 percent more than ten years ago, when the Spanish export of cucumbers stood at 448.68 million kilos.

The export value of those cucumbers also reached a record high, amounting to 549.66 million Euro. This is 47.82 percent more than in 2007, when the value of the country's cucumber exports stood at 371.84 million Euro.

The average price of cucumbers exported in 2016 was 0.868 Euro per kilo, which is 13.76 percent more than in the previous year. However, the price of cucumber exports during the decade has remained mostly stable, despite some occasional sharp variations.

Countries
In 2016, Germany bought four out of every ten cucumbers exported by Spain, a total of 246.59 million kilos. Germany was thus the main importer of Spanish cucumbers, accounting for 38.92 percent of the total. The total value of the cucumber sales to Germany in 2016 was 214.04 million Euro, with an average price of 0.868 Euro per kilo. Cucumber exports to Germany were carried out by a total of 180 Spanish companies.

The UK was the second largest buyer of Spanish cucumbers. In 2016, it bought a total of 85.92 million kilos worth 72.06 million Euro at an average price of 0.839 Euro per kilo. The number of companies that sold cucumbers to the United Kingdom in 2016 was 109.

The Netherlands ranks third among the largest customers of Spanish cucumbers. Last year it bought a total of 85.7 million kilos, for which it paid 77.32 million Euro at an average price of 0.902 Euro per kilo. These operations were carried out by 131 companies.

The fourth largest buyer was France, which bought 52.82 million kilos of cucumbers worth 45.8 million Euro at an average price of 0.853 Euro per kilo. A total of 220 companies sold cucumbers to France in the past year.

The fifth largest customer of Spanish cucumbers was Poland, which bought a total of 32.54 million kilos worth 26.38 million Euro, at an average price of 0.811 Euro per kilo. Sales of Spanish cucumbers to Poland were carried out by 108 companies.
