"Spain: "We rescue tomato varieties that were almost lost"

The new market trends, with a greater demand from supermarket chains, etc., are affecting the way tomatoes are grown. There is a search for very resistant varieties but, above all, for the greatest production in the smallest possible space. However, "people complain that they have no flavour," states Manolo García Montoya, manager of Parkos. In this company they are trying to rescue the taste of traditional tomatoes, with particular attention to varieties like the Pepper, Raff or Rambo.

"What sets us apart from the rest is the use of irrigation water with greater salinity." This factor makes the production volume become "even 50% smaller than that of a producer using less saline water," explains García. In this way, the plants are stressed, resulting in a lower production volume and a boost to the flavour.

One of its flagship products is the cherry tomato which they are shipping to Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga. "For now, 95% of our production remains in Spain, marketed under the 18KT brand, although we expect this trend to change in the coming years," says García.
