Switzerland: Apples and tomatoes top retail charts

Apples and bananas are the fruits that were most widely distributed in Swiss retail in 2016. When it comes to vegetables, consumers paid the most for tomatoes. Following tomatoes at a great distance were carrots and close behind were bell peppers.

The image shows the ten fruits and vegetables that were most widely distributed in the 2016 retail trade.

Avocado-sales rapidly increased
With the ten highest-selling fruits, retail sales in 2016 totaled CHF 1.07 billion. This is 4.8% more than last year. This represents around 64% of the total fruit sales in the retail trade. Especially for avocados, consumers have spend more (+29%). Additionally, lemons (+23%) and raspberries (+13%) rose significantly. In the case of blueberries, consumer spending (+21%) also rose sharply. They follow the raspberries as 11th highest-selling fruit with their sales totaling around 60 million francs.

Vegetable prices have risen
Consumption expenditures for the ten top-selling vegetables amounted to a total of 0.96 billion francs in 2016 (about 54% of the total expenditure on vegetables in the retail trade). Compared with 2015, this is an increase of 3.6%. This is primarily due to higher prices. As a result, there was a price increase of 5.5% on average in the case of asparagus, cucumbers and the lettuces shown in the image, while the purchasing volume declined by 2.8%.
