Pakistan: Launching its first horticulture export policy

The Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Standing Committee on Horticulture, Agriculture Produce & Processed Food Exports held a meeting under the Chairmanship of Imtiaz Hussain and discussed the restraints faced in horticultural production, where all members have a strong emphasis for the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive horticulture export policy of Pakistan for the upcoming 5 years.

The policy will be helpful to set the exports guidelines & targets, improvement in product mix, long terms financing facilities and the development of subsidies & special duty drawbacks for the horticulture sector for the coming years.

The policy will also analyze the data of agriculture based exports, determine the crops of export potential within presently cultivated areas, and organise crop scheduling in a manner which will ensure a regular supply of export oriented crops. In this way, a data bank would also be available which will help with crop management and future plans. The committee will undertake projects in selected areas to educate growers in the use of the latest agricultural equipment, improve skills and explain the benefits of crop rotation, product handling and quality assurance.

It will also focus on revising Pakistan's FTA’s (Free Trade Agreements) with all countries where a preference should be given to the main export commodities like the mango, the mandarin onion, potatoes, chilis and dates.

Chairman of the Standing Committee, Imtiaz Hussain, (Managing Director M/s. Imtiaz Enterprises) has expressed his ambition that he will make an all out effort for the earliest establishment and functioning of the horticulture committee in the next couple of months. At the next meeting, consolidated proposals and mechanisms will be approved and submitted to the government.
