The University of Almería (UAL), Cajamar and the company Rijk Zwaan have signed an agreement for the installation of a system for the adsorption of carbon dioxide from biomass.
The signing has taken place after a visit to the company's facilities by a university delegation led by the Rector, Carmelo Rodríguez, in which he had the opportunity to jointly determine strategic areas of collaboration aimed at promoting research and facilitate the training of university students and researchers.
As pointed out by the academic body in a note, the UAL and Cajamar have developed a system for the adsorption of carbon dioxide from biomass which can be used in any greenhouse. The system was conceived and designed by both entities and evaluated at the Cajamar Experimental Station. It is protected by a patent owned by the University of Almería.
The agreement establishes that the UAL, through the research groups Automation, Robotics and Mechatronics and Biotechnology of marine microalgae, along with Cajamar, will collaborate with Rijk Zwaan to install the system in its Centre for Tests and Demonstration, located in Paraje La Maleza de Santa María del Aguila, in El Ejido, Almería.
For its part, Rijk Zwaan will provide the University of Almeria and Cajamar with the results on the operation of this facility in its Centre in order to assess the correct operation of the same.
Rodríguez affirmed that "with this agreement, research in the agro-food sector is strengthened; in fact, such programs are testament to the magnificent collaboration between the public and private sectors for the development of projects that respond to the needs of the economic and social environment."
For his part, the manager of the Rijk Zwaan centre, Manolo Correa, said that "we wanted to go a step further in our commitment to the sustainability of protected crops in the CED El Ejido, our Centre for Tests and Demonstrations, helping to facilitate the implementation of a prototype developed by the University of Almería and Cajamar Experimental Station for the capture of CO2 in the use of plant nutrition.
In the case of Cajamar, the director of Agro-food Innovation of the entity, Roberto García, has highlighted the "commitment" of the entity to strengthen the agro-food sector. After the entry into force of the agreement, a joint work commission will be set up, whose main functions will be to address any problems of interpretation and compliance that may arise in the development of the agreement signed. The agreement will remain valid for a maximum of four years.
