UK: AHDB backs 2017 Nuffield Triennial Conference

A major international conference celebrating the best of agriculture in Britain is being backed by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

This year’s prestigious Nuffield International Triennial Conference and Field Tours will shine a two-week spotlight on farming, food and rural enterprise in Britain.

Starting on June 3, this year’s event will feature seven themed days of unique visits to pioneering farms, diversified rural enterprises and thriving agri-food businesses.

These will be followed by a further three days of focused sector Technical Field Tours, which aim to whet the appetite of enthusiasts who are keen to learn more from our industry leaders in the fields of arable, dairy, beef and sheep, poultry and sustainable farming.

This year’s theme of ‘Small Island, Big Ideas’, showcases the very best in farming, food, technology and our diversified rural landscape.

And as part of the whole Triennial experience, a high-profile Conference Day is being held at the East Midlands Conference Centre, at Nottingham University, on Thursday June 8 to explore ‘Farming Fit For Food’.

The focus of the conference is in response to the rising consumer interest in healthy food, coupled with the simultaneous rise in diet-related public health issues, such as obesity and diabetes.

AHDB CEO Jane King said: “We are delighted to be supporting this year’s event at a crucial time for agriculture in Britain. The industry faces new opportunities and challenges with Brexit. This initiative will showcase pioneering farm businesses and enable farmers and growers to compare and consider what’s happening on competitor farms overseas.”

Nuffield International runs the conference every three years in one of the member countries, with the last event in Canada in 2014. Over the years its reputation within the industry has grown and today attracts key decision-makers from across the globe.

The aim is to build friendships between Nuffield Scholars and industry representatives, and to stimulate a global network of agricultural influencers. The event also provides attendees with the chance to learn about farming practices and innovation in the UK.

Roger Mercer, Nuffield’s International Chairman, said: “Our 2017 Triennial is a one-of-a-kind event. Brimming with enthusiasm and innovation, the programme will demonstrate why agriculture in Britain continues to be a powerhouse for new practices and the home for fresh thinking.

“In keeping with tradition, our Triennial also offers some unmissable social events, along with great opportunities to renew Nuffield friendships from around the world, or simply to meet up with scholars you haven’t seen for many a year.”
