First British grown produce a premium for local markets

The British greenhouse growers are slowly starting to pick their first crops again. According to the latest data provided by market intelligence service ProduceView, the first British cucumbers are again on the shelves of several UK retailers.

The survey of ProduceView found British cucumbers at supermarkets Sainsbury, Asda and Morrisons, where they have replaced the supplies from Spain and Holland. British retailers Tesco and Aldi still bought their cucumbers from Dutch traders last week, while Lidl, Waitrose and M&S are still offering Spanish cucumbers. Prices are between 49 pence (Aldi & Lidl) and 55 pence (Asda & Waitrose) for a cucumber.

Unfortunately, the cucumbers are still the only British grown product found at the retailers last week. While we did see on Twitter that some British growers have found the first ripe fruit in their greenhouses, the retail still greatly depends on imported greenhouse produce. Perhaps this is because some of the British grown tomatoes are marketed as a premium product through local resellers, restaurants and grocery stores?

Specialty tomatoes from Nutbourne Nursery have arrived at local restaurants.

Retailers that want to offer red bell peppers are also confined to imports from Israel (Tesco, 50p for a pepper), Holland (Asda, 60p for a pepper) and Spain (Sainsbury - 50p, Morrisons - 60p, M&S - 50p, Lidl - 50p, and Aldi - 47p).

This is also the case for Cherry Vine Tomatoes. Produce View only found Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese Cherry Vine Tomatoes at the British retailers.
