German ag minister plans 20% more organic agriculture

Twenty per cent organic agriculture is an important milestone on the road to an agricultural sector suitable for the future. The 20 per cent aim is strived for by the Government of the German Federal Republic in its sustainability strategy. German Minister of Agriculture Christian Schmidt recently talked to 180 delegates of 7,000 Bioland growers about how to achieve this goal as quickly as possible. Christian Schmidt: “With the future strategy for organic agriculture we want to make it easier for agricultural companies in Germany to switch to organic farming. Moreover, we want to achieve the goal of growing organically on 20 per cent of the German agricultural area within my term of office.”

Switching to organic farming could offer perspective to 40,000 agricultural companies. Two million additional hectares of organic agricultural area provides society with an additional value for animal welfare, biodiversity and climate protection. Bioland chairman Jan Plagge: “The strategy for the future is a good start. Organic agriculture offers much potential for a more environmentally friendly and more sustainable agricultural sector in Germany.”

During the debates between Bioland delegates and Minister Schmidt, the delegates once again expressed their incomprehension of the revision of the organic agricultural regulation of the EU, which the government wants to implement throughout the sector against the sector’s wishes. As a central point, the Bioland delegates advised the minister to choose the right path and stop the revision.
