CAN (AB): A new workshop on Controlled Environment Agriculture
Controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) is a technology-based approach toward food production that aims to maintain optimal growing conditions while protecting the crop as it develops. Often called vertical farming, it can be done in a variety of locations and formats with the key being high levels of production in a confined space using artificial light to control the crop.
“Vertical farming, replacement light growing, call it what you will, but CEA is hot in Alberta,” says Dustin Morton, commercial horticulture specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “This workshop will look at some of the need-to-know aspects of vertical farming, such as the state of the industry and lighting basics, and will also connect you to research and resources within AF and the City of Edmonton. It’s a great opportunity to meet other growers and connect into this growing industry.”
