No snack tomato soup due to last year's hail damage

Kromkommer is temporarily not delivering tomato soup made from snack tomatoes. This is due to the hail damage sustained by supplier and greenhouse grower Greenco last year. "While there’s no waste, there’s no soup," Kromkommer explains on their blog.

The soup is usually made from leftover Greenco snack tomatoes. "Why is there a leftover of these tasty tomatoes? Because supply and demand temporarily don’t match. This can occur when, for example, a lot of snack tomatoes are suddenly coming in from Spain. Then, sometimes, there’s less demand for Dutch snack tomatoes in the market. But a spike in production when it’s unexpectedly hot can also result in a surplus," Kromkommer writes on their blog.

Last year, however, there was much less of a surplus. "This is partly due to the heavy hailstorms that destroyed part of the greenhouses in our country in the spring of 2016. This also meant that we could make less soup. We make our soups from vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. When there’s no waste, there’s no soup (seems logical, right?)." It remains to be seen if there will again be snack tomato soup this year. "The Dutch tomato season kicks off in May. If there are surpluses, then we'll make soup again," Kromkommer concludes. Other types of tomato soup are available.
