US: Transplant starts under broad grow spectrum LEDs

As northern growers prepare for warmer weather in the coming months, an increasing number are creating germination and seedling growth systems utilizing LED grow lights to get head starts on transplants. As with any sole source growing environment lacking sunlight, the spectrum of artificial light can have drastic impacts on growth efficiency and quality. As a result, broad grow spectrum lights are a common choice to efficiently start these plants off well.

Shown above are TotalGrow Broad Grow Spectrum Light bulbs which provide a helpful versatility for small and potentially make-shift applications such as these. The spectrum is effective and efficient for any crop at any stage of life, as shown in West Virginia University testing. The 11W bulbs with standard household socket bases can be arranged to provide the appropriate light intensities across almost any setup, from pallet racks to wire shelving to dining room floors, with or without extra light from windows.

Grower tests at Mud Lake Farm comparing more conventional T5 fluorescent grow lights to these lights have demonstrated the potential of this investment. See the impact of the TotalGrow LED light bulbs while using only 60% of the electricity of the fluorescent lights below:

After transplants are finished, growers can consider continuing to utilize the setup for year-round greens production.
