Canada ag minister sees huge potential for blueberry exports to China

Next week in Beijing officials will discuss future free trade agreements between Canada and China and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay wants the farm-to-fork sector he oversees in government to be a big focus in the deal.

"China wants our food and we want to sell it to them," MacAulay said in an interview with Xinhua on Wednesday. "The Canadian agricultural sector has the capabilities and know-how to help China meet its growing demand for safe food."

One product with great promise according to MacAulay are blueberries, which China wants and is, conveniently, Canada's largest fruit crop grown nationally.

"The Chinese need to know what we have, and are aware of the quality of our goods and our regulatory system. I want to make sure the Chinese people are demanding more and more products from Canada."

Canadian agri-food products sold to China grew up to 6.1 billion dollars last year, representing 30 percent of all Canadian exports to China. MacAulay plans to lead another agricultural delegation to China later this year.
