CAN (AB): Positive meeting on issues with supplemental lighting in Medicine Hat

Greenhouse growers from the Medicine Hat area in Alberta have recently met with representatives from Cypress Country and the Medicine Hat Regional Airport. The meeting was the first formal gathering of all the parties to work toward a resolution to the problems caused by the supplemental lighting of the greenhouses. Cypress County planning supervisor Jeffrey Dowling categorized the tone of the meeting as “cordial” and “positive.”

“Everyone got a feel for each side’s issues, and what the complications are; trying to discuss to see how we can work forward to figure out a way of solving the problems,” said Dowling in an article on Medicinehatnews.com. “There are more (greenhouse) operations in Cypress County who are going to want to come forward for lighting. This issue is not going away. Right now, we’re not sure about how or what the solution is going to be. That is what this committee is going to work on. We would like to get this resolved sooner rather than later.”

Big Marble Farms co-owner Albert Cramer hoped the committee’s work would find common ground for all involved. “I think the meeting was held to understand each other a little bit better, and to see what the problem is and what could be done about it,” he said. “This is just the first step, and I think working together we’re going to solve this problem.”
