"Algae growth, evaporation and pollution in water storage," Bass Fortuin of Genap sums it all up. "You would want to protect your water against these matters." For this reason the company introduced a new free-standing roof for water silos.
In the past year several of these roofs, both waterproof and water-permeable, were supplied to countries with severe climatic conditions such as Kazakhstan and Canada. Precisely because of this great international interest in this solution, Genap will showcase this free-standing roof structure at the Horticontact show in Holland this week.
Genap developed the free-standing roof that can protect both new and existing water silos against pollution, UV radiation and evaporation. A big advantage is that the roof can be placed over both steel and concrete silos without any adjustment.
The roof structure - among other materials is made of arched, steel pipes - is supported by sturdy uprights that are mounted on concrete footings around the silo. For additional stability for roofs with a diameter in excess of 10 meters, a roof-supporting central column is placed. This makes the roof also resistant to snow- and wind loads.
The light steel pipe structure is inspired by greenhouse design. A plastic sheet is stretched over the steel structure. "Permeable or completely waterproof, depending on the requirement of the customer," Bas explains. "Because the roof is separated from the silo, the silo is not subjected to additional forces."
Silos with a diameter up to 15½ meters can be covered by our roof. "This comes down to 80% of all silos," Bas says. "We focus on both new silos and silos already in operation, regardless of brand. Because of the simple construction the client can do the installation himself, should he prefer to do so.
