Farmers' markets helping Qatar farmers get more for their produce

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment believe their recent initiatives have benefited farmers and helped them to get more money by selling their produce directly to the customers through several methods including farmers' markets.

The farmers are now able to sell over 50 percent of their vegetables directly to the customers after the Ministry opened farmers' market’s. Farmers are able to get up to QR4 per box more by directly selling vegetables through these markets. Earlier farmers were selling their produce through auction at a central market.

One farmer, Mohamad Nazim, stated, “We produce about 1,000 boxes in a day. We harvest more during the weekend to sell directly to the customers at farmers' markets."

Many major shopping complexes have signed contracts with the Ministry to take very marginal profit on the sale of local vegetables as part of the initiative to support the farmers. Stores have also added special shelves promoting premium produce from the local farms to help farmers.
