Mexico: Tabasco exports cucumbers to the US and Canada

Tabasco's diversification of its economy after the oil debacle has begun to succeed.

So far this year, agricultural producers from Tabasco have introduced 105 tons of cucumber of the European and Persian varieties to the United States and Canada.

In an interview with Grupo Canton, businessman Victor Alberto Urrutia Madrigal, confirmed the opening of these markets to the European and Persian cucumbers produced in the La Estrella Hydroponic Nursery, located in the Pablo L. Sidar, Centro farm.

He noted that they had initially sent 90 tons, about 18,000 boxes of fruit, and that they had loaded this year's fifth trailer with 3,000 boxes (about 15 tons) last Thursday. The project had an investment of 50 million pesos, with resources from Financiera Nacional, where they built three production facilities in 4.5 hectares.

"85 to 90% of our annual production, estimated at 1,200 tons, is for export, the rest is for the domestic market," he said.

He said the cargo arrived at McAllen and was then distributed throughout Texas, then to the northern United States, primarily Chicago and New York, and from there to Canada.

He said that the production that wasn't exported was sent to the domestic market, through the Mexico City's Central Market, as the people in Tabasco were not used to consuming these varieties, as they only marketed white and thunderbird cucumbers .

"We are looking for local market with restaurateurs, cucumber lovers, and distributors," he said.

The businessman also said that they were creating 120 direct jobs.
