US: MedMen CEO joins cannabis policy council

Adam Bierman, co-founder and chief executive of Los Angeles-based cannabis firm MedMen, has been tapped by the industry's top trade organization to help lead its efforts in shaping federal marijuana policy.

Mr. Bierman has been named co-chair of the National Cannabis Industry Association's Policy Council, an 18-member panel of the cannabis industry's top business leaders tasked with conducting in-depth research and producing policy recommendations to the federal government to legalize and regulate cannabis.

Medical marijuana is legal in 29 states and recreational marijuana is legal in California, Nevada, Massachusetts, Maine, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. According to Wall Street investment bank Cowen and Company, Americans consume about $6 billion worth of legal marijuana annually, and that number is expected to reach $50 billion within the decade. Despite the rapid growth of the legal cannabis industry, the federal government continues to classify marijuana as a Schedule I drug.

"Our industry has been marching steadily and responsibly toward full legalization, and I am honored by this opportunity to work closely with members of the NCIA to get us through the finish line," said Mr. Bierman. "We have momentum and public opinion on our side. Two thirds of Americans now live in a state with some form of legal cannabis, and polls show record level public support for legalization. We look forward to working with the federal government to set policy and regulations that safeguard consumers and the long term viability of our industry."
