Netherlands: Start of courgette flower season

This Monday, 30 January, marks the start of the courgette flower sales for CourgetteFleur Zwinkels. "Because of the sunny winter weather and fertile state of the plant, the campaign is currently ahead of schedule," explains Johan Zwinkels. "The flowers of young courgette plants have bloomed profusely and crowds of bumblebees are flying around; a beautiful sight."

The Spanish weather has had an impact on the courgette market, but those selling flowers have not been affected. "The flowers are really a different product. We only harvest them to order to be able to deliver the freshest product possible; the fresher the product, the better the end result on the plate." That is why the flowers are also only harvested in the mornings, between 7 and 11 am, when the plants bloom. They are then shipped across the world, from the UK and France to Dubai. "We have a fairly stable market, but we are also welcoming new customers. It is and will remain a small product."

"We grow all our products with a maximum biological effort so that we can deliver a nice, clean and honest product," explains Johan. The products are GlobalGAP and Grasp-certified. They are available in various packaging formats and feature a bar and QR code. Besides the regular courgette flower, they also offer the Fioretta (male flowers without fruit) and green Mini Courgettes. Soon will come also the yellow Mini and yellow courgette flower.
