“New method of chlorine spraying works well”

It’s important, especially at the start of the new year to have a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the greenhouse. All the residue from dirt, cleaning supplies and other chemicals has to go. To make sure that the space is disinfected totally, mechanical chlorine spray technology is used. Sproeibedrijf Van Hattem from Rotterdam (Netherlands), has expertise in the field of disinfecting and has invested widely in the newest technology. Owner Gert-Jan van Hattem explains the process.

20 hectares per day
“The manner in which we use chlorine spraying is unique in the Netherlands. We’re the only company that works with advanced pumps that can generate a lot of force. The spray cart is placed in the middle of the bars. We spray from left to right at the same time; more than ten meters wide and three meters high. We do this three times within two trellises, to ensure continuous overlapping. The pump sprays with a force of 80bar, which is 100-120 liters per minute. This results in a pressure of 40bar on the work surfaces. And that’s a lot. The chlorine reaches in all corners, and every nook and cranny, making sure everything gets wet. This results in the optimum disinfection.”

Specialty spray
Van Hattem started experimenting with mechanical chlorine spraying four years ago. Two years ago, they commissioned specially designed pumps that were able to handle working with chlorine. “The earlier pumps broke down after a few hours, due to the corrosive nature of the chlorine. These new pumps were specially made to be used with aggressive products. With our present capacity, we can complete job after job. We can easily complete twenty hectares a day.”

Aside from mechanical chlorine spraying, Sproeibedrijf Van Hattem is specialized in mechanical and manual chalking (and de-chalking) of greenhouses.
