US: Kroger to hire 10,000 store employees

Supermarket giant Kroger said Monday it plans to hire 10,000 permanent employees across its different chains as it continues to expand. The Cincinnati-based company currently employs more than 430,000 workers nationwide. Kroger (KR) has store chains such as Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Dillons, Smith's, King Soopers, Harris Teeter and Food 4 Less. (usatoday.com)

India: Fruit and veg retailer Freshworld raises fresh funding

Retailworx Pvt. Ltd, which owns and operates food and vegetable retailing startup Freshworld, has raised a fresh round of funding from a clutch of angel investors, according to people close to the development. Bengaluru-based Freshworld works on a ‘farm-to-home’ concept by organising fruit and vegetable retailing through street vendors using battery-operated carts. (vccircle.com)

X5 Retail Group shows largest revenue growth in history

At the end of 2016, net retail sales of retailer X5 Retail Group amounted to 291.3bn roubles ($4.92bn), which is 27.5% more than in 2015, the company announced. Like-for-like sales rose 7.5% year on year with traffic rising 1.8% and a basket up 5.6% in the fourth quarter. Full-year 2016 net retail sales increased 27.5% to 1.03 trillion roubles; Full-year 2016 like-for-like sales rose 7.7% year on year with traffic up 2.5% and basket up 5.0%. (Reuters)

Lenta to extend its store base in Moscow

Italy’s VéGé Group launches online sales in Sicily
Italian retailer VéGé Group has launched an online shopping service in South Italy through its local partner, Commerciale GiCap. The e-commerce service is the first of the FCMG market in Sicily and was set up in collaboration with Risparmiosuper.it. It currently covers the entire territory of the city of Messina from Torre Faro up to the municipality of Roccalumera. Système U turnover up 1.5% to reach €19.2bn

French cooperative Système U saw its 2016 turnover reach €19.2bn, marking growth of 1.5% for the 12 months. It was a year of two halves for its retailers, with a 0.1% loss of market share for its H1, and then a resurgence in H2, which saw its strongest ever December, during which sales rose 2.7% on a like-for-like basis. After a €300m investment spent over the last four years, 26 hypermarkets and 486 supermarkets, including franchises, have been revamped. The main characteristics of the new generation of contigo stores are a strong specialisation in fresh produce and the prominence of local products that seek to promote an improved gastronomic culture.
