Italy: Agri Import's experience in soil-less cultivation

Agri Import is a business established in 2010 and specialising in the trading of agricultural products in south-eastern Sicily.

A deep knowledge of the agricultural business led administrator Vito D'Amato to look for state-of-the-art tools and techniques to use at the service of greenhouse cultivation.

D'Amato immediately focused on introducing coir soil-less cultivation not only in Sicily, but all over Italy.

The company's facility is located in the Ragusa industrial area and covers an area of over 1,000 square feet.

Vito's nephew Giovanni D'Amato is in charge of managing the warehouse, transport and delivery of products, while, after her degree in Agricultural Sciences, daughter Enrica brought innovation to her father's business.

Thanks to its constant research, Agri Import successfully employs its know-how, experience and agronomic techniques to soil-less cultivation. It also provides training and advice for what concerns technical and technological innovation.

"Soil-less cultivation is gaining popularity in our area thanks to its proven advantages. Using an excellent substrate (Palmeco in our case) means providing the right nutritional elements, which are supplied through fertigation. I would like to stress we are the exclusive licencees of this brand in Italy."

Soil-less cultivation includes all those techniques needed when there is no soil. Plants are anchored in substrates and water and nutritional elements are provided through a solution complete with macro and micro nutrients.

"Palmeco coir is recognised as an excellent, practical and efficient product. It adapts to all kinds of environments, climates and exposure. The specific production cycle derives from the processing and treatment of nuts. In particular, during the crushing of the mesocarp, specific equipment enables the attainment of a uniform mix that guarantees the excellent aeration and development of roots. The fact that there is no sand or dust between the micropores guarantees safe hydration preventing compaction, which would lead to root asphyxia."

Agri Import srl's reference market extends all over Italy for a total of 321 thousand linear metres of product sold (2016) both in Sicily (70%) and the rest of Italy (30%).
