New series of Belgian trials into tomato cultivation under LED

Last year the LED fixtures of Lemnis Oreon were used in tomato research at the ‘Proefstation voor de Groenteteelt’ in Sint-Katelijne-Waver in Belgium.

The results of the crop were compared with those of tomatoes grown under SON-T lamps. This season the research is going to be continued, in which the current research objectives will be sharpened and a few additional research objectives will be formulated.

Currently, SON-T lamps are most commonly used for artificial lighting for tomatoes. But now, more and more, growers opt for a hybrid solution for various reasons. In addition to the lower operating costs of LED lamps, there are also positive crop results. This is being tested in the research facility of ‘Proefstation voor de Groenteteelt’ as we speak. In addition to the treatment in which 175 uMol/m2 SON-T is the standard, there are 3 other treatments, namely:
  • 220 uMol/m2 single SON-T
  • 175 uMol/m2 SON-T + 80 uMol/m2 LED toplighting
  • 175 uMol/m2 SON-T + 80 uMol/m2 LED interlighting
The plants were planted on October 19, 2016. The production has started in week 52.

The variety that is grown is Merlice (De Ruiter).
