Danish herb grower trials multi layer unit

Danish herb grower Rosborg Gartneriet has carried out special trials to research the potential of herb cultivation in the multilayer growing system from Viemose-Driboga. Over the last six months, Rosborg used the Multi Green Grow unit of Viemose to grow Basil, chives and parsley in an automated multilayer setting with full control of light, climate and irrigation.

The test were carried out to optimize planting, production and cropping schemes, as well as creating an optimal output from the multi layer growing system. The grower took a critical look at the efficacy of the automated production system to determine if it is commercially viable. He informed that the trials gave better insights. "It was found that parsley has a shorter production time in the system. We also found that less seed is required for chives when they are produced under LEDs. As well as this we did not see any dead leaves at the moment that the plants were ready for market."

The grower confirmed that the herbs achieved the right color and taste."Basil experienced some minor issues under the light conditions, but nevertheless we are convinced that we can optimize this by making some adjustments."

The grower already used standard single gutter systems in his greenhouse to produce herbs. "The trials have shown that herbs grown in the multi layer system require different light spectra and light intensities than the herbs grown with sunlight and SON-T lamps in the greenhouse. There are not 2 different products which should be grown under the same light and irrigation conditions and therefore every herb should get an individually-tailored care. Yet, we are very satisfied with results of the tests which show that multilayer production is beneficial."
