Price has been the lowest of the past ten campaigns

Spain: Record-breaking aubergine exports

In the 2015/2016 season, Spain exported the largest volume of aubergines on record, with a volume that exceeded 160 million kilos, but with the lowest price of the past ten seasons, according to data from the statistical service Estacom (Icex-Tax Agency), with code 070930 of the Tariff Integrated of the European Communities (TARIC)

Between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, the total volume of Spanish aubergine exports reached 160.82 million kilos, 69.85 percent more than ten years earlier.

However, the price at which it has been sold, 0.764 Euro per kilo, has been the worst of the last ten campaigns.

This lower price has prevented the total value of exports of Spanish aubergines to also beat the record in terms of income, which has remained at 122.8 million Euro.

Countries
France has been the main customer of Spanish aubergines, absorbing 30.78 percent of the exports of this vegetable. France imported a total of 49.5 million kilos worth 38.67 million Euro, paying an average price of 0.781 Euro per kilo.

The second largest buyer of Spanish aubergines has been Germany, with a total of 36.12 million kilos, 26.63 million Euro and an average price of 0.737 Euro/kilo. It is followed by Italy, which last year bought 22.1 million kilos from Spain worth 15.11 million Euro, paying an average price of 0.684 Euro per kilo.

The fourth country in the ranking of largest importers of Spanish aubergines has been the Netherlands, with 13.47 million kilos, 10.66 million Euro and an average price of 0.791 Euro per kilo. Fifth is the United Kingdom, with 12.54 million kilos, 10.77 million Euro and an average price of 0.859 Euro per kilo.

Export by provinces
In this campaign, aubergine exports made from the province of Almeria have been 12 times higher than those of Valencia, which is the province that stands second in the ranking.

Between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, Almeria has exported 124.51 million kilos of this vegetable, which represents 77.4 percent of the Spanish total. These exports have provided Almeria an income of 90.63 million Euro. The price per kilo of aubergines exported by Almeria has been 0.728 Euro per kilo.

The second province in importance by volume has been Valencia, which has shipped 10.28 million kilos of aubergines. The value of Valencian exports has stood at 10.72 million Euro and its average price has reached 1.042 Euro per kilo.

Barcelona is third in the ranking, with 9.25 million kilos worth 6.58 million Euro and an average price of 0.711 Euro per kilo.
