Volatile lettuce market in Italy

After a mild late October, November was characterised by sunny days alternated with drops in temperature. This more rigid weather, combined with periods of rain, affected the harvesting of vegetables. On the last 10 days of the month, temperatures increased again to reach 17/18°C.

There was a drop in the volumes of lettuce (both open field and greenhouse). This was caused by the weather during the first three weeks of October, which compromised part of the produce in open fields and caused delays in greenhouses.

In November, demand was particularly active for lettuce and, considering the lack of volumes, for other vegetables too. Demand for puntarelle, green celery, cabbage and fennel was not very lively, leading to a drop in prices.

Lettuce

Garlic (bunches and braids) prices were satisfactory. More volumes were sold than November 2015 and quality was good.

Chard, chicory and beet volumes were good and quality was in line with the parameters demanded. Only puntarelle did not reach a higher price than November 2015.

For what concerns leaf carrots, volumes were in line with last years while quotations were higher. Quality was excellent and the produce was tender and sweet.

White cauliflower prices were in line with the previous year and were only discounted towards the end of the month due to the volumes available. Quality was good and ripening was perfect.

Right: Savoy cabbage

Red and green cabbage and pak-choi prices were low due to the big volumes available. Only conehead cabbage had a higher price due to the lower quantities available.

Fennel quotations were lower than 2015, even though quantities available were limited. Demand was never very lively.

In November, the lettuce and endive situation changed completely - quotations skyrocketed and remained high for the whole month. This was due mainly to the lack of produce, as only 180 tons of produce were available with respect to the 240 tons of produce collected in November 2015. The demand for PGI produce was rather lively and quotations reached up to €1.70/kg on specific days.

The sweet potato season is coming to an end and prices are going down once again. This year was definitely not a good ones for producers of this crop.

Leek harvesting operations continue. Quotations and quantities have increased with respect to November 2015 thanks to good selections. The produce is still tender, delicate and sweet.

Parsley did quite good, as demand was stable. The drop in volumes available due to the weather was balanced out by an increase in sales prices.

In early November, demand was constant for various types of radicchio, so quotations were positive. Sales then slowed down, causing prices to drop. In general, though, November can be considered a positive month.

The negative green celery trend continues in November too. Demand was very slow, also due to quality problems. Demand for white celery was instead quite lively and quotations more than doubled with respect to November 2015.

The apple market was quite calm. Demand was lively only at low prices and only if the quality was excellent.

Demand was rather good for pears and quotations benefited from it. Volumes were much lower than expectations.
