Eminent introduces purple-and-yellow Eclips tomato

This new Eclips tomato is still in trials this year, but that is definitely going to change. During the AGF Detail exhibition in Holland this week, Eminent showed this purple-and-yellow tomato to a larger audience, without arousing high expectations, incidentally. “This is the first year we have this tomato, and weekly, we still only have about 30 kilograms available. We will definitely expand the production,” says Yeliz Kaya of Eminent.

Ruud Zwinkels and Yeliz Kaya of Eminent Food

The tomato was bred by Eminent Seeds, and gets its name from the solar eclipse. “This tomato colours purple on the side facing the sun,” Kaya explains. “We are trying to develop the tomato further, and to get it a little larger. In any case, next year the tomato will be moved from the trial greenhouse to the production greenhouse, and besides expansion in the Netherlands, we will also try to grow it in Spain. Given the demand already existing, we expect a lot of this tomato. It has a very good flavour. It is a nice eye-catcher to use in the catering industry, but the more specialised greengrocer's should also be able to distinguish themselves with these tomatoes.”

Craziest peppers in one box
A separate novelty for Eminent is a mew try-out-experience, for which various types of peppers are put in one box. “We have at least 35 types of pepper in our range, looking at all the sorts and sizes. Not every pepper has a large market, so we put all of the craziest peppers in one box,” says Ruud Zwinkels. The idea can be called an immediate success, because 400 of these boxes were sold in their first week already.

“In this manner, unknown peppers are being sent all over the world through our clients. That will definitely lead to repeat purchases,” Zwinkels expects. “Especially countries such as Italy are open to the new peppers. Consumption is a little lower in the Netherlands, but people are starting to use more and more peppers at home due to cookery shows such as Masterchef.”
