Netherlands: Syngenta shows off new tomato varieties

Syngenta introduced the highlights of their range at the recent tomato congress they organized. Frank van Antwerpen, tomato expert at Syngenta, notices that the name 'Sweetelle' seems to be approaching brand name status. "In this segment, Funtelle is already a household name in the United Kingdom, thanks to a concession from a large British supermarket. Hopefully, this variety will also be grown in the Netherlands."

Belido was introduced in the Netherlands last year, and this year it will also be introduced in illuminated cultivation. This sweet, juicy cherry TOV weighs 11-13 grams and has 16-18 tomatoes on the vine.

T313217 is a newly introduced tomato this year, and has an ivory color. Frank van Antwerpen: "In terms of flavor, it's comparable with Sweetelle and Angelle. This tomato has a brix value of 10."

The shape, taste, quality and color are considered an added value.

The T813485 is the newcomer for the Belgian market. This crop is an early producer. The uniform development and fruits, combined with the red color, results in a good quality.

Coeur de boeufs
Arawak continues to be the main variety for the Netherlands and Belgium, while Tomawak is exclusive for the Belgian market. Gigawak has a slightly firmer fruit with more uniform development. Frank van Antwerpen: "These tomatoes have good flavor, provided they're eaten when slightly orange/green. That's one challenge ahead... informing the consumers about the right moment to eat Coeur de Boeuf."
